SHAH ALAM: Five people were killed following a string of accidents that had resulted from a motorcycle breaking down at the Federal Highway.
The accident occurred at around 3.30am yesterday shortly after three motorcyclists stopped by the road shoulder to help one of them, whose machine had suffered a broken drive chain.
While they attempted to fix the motorcycle, a Honda City went out of control and plough into the motorcyclists before the car landed sideways in a ditch.
The collision instantly killed two of the motorcyclists and the driver of the Honda car was flung out of his vehicle and succumbed to head injuries.
Following the initial accident, four people passing by in a BMW car stopped to help.
When one of them was helping the victims, another motorcyclist was killed when he rammed into the BMW.
The car passenger also died due to horrific injuries to his head and his left leg was severed due to the crash.
Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Zahedi Ayub said the dead have been identified as Wilson Lee, 22, M. Kalaychelven, 50, Muhammad Faridzuan Mohd Aziz, 21, Amirul Faiq Zainuddin, 22, and Syahmie Farid Izzat Samsudin Shah, 21.
“We have taken a sample of the Honda driver's blood to test if he was driving under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
It is not known why the motorcyclists did not use the motorcycle lane along the Federal Highway.
ACP Zahedi advised motorcyclists to use the motorcycle lanes for their own safety.
Officer-in-charge of traffic for Selangor Deputy Supt Azmi Mansor urged motorists not to stop by the road shoulder unless it was absolutely necessary.
“In the event of a breakdown or an accident, always make sure that you are standing behind the road dividers. Motorists must always abide by the speed limits and road rules to ensure the safety of themselves and other motorists,” he said.
